Covidshield, Covaxin & Sputnik V compared for efficacy/effectiveness

Unpublished data suggests that leaving a longer gap between the first and second doses increases the overall effectiveness of the jab - in a sub-group given the vaccine this way it was found to be 70% effective after the first dose.

Covaxin:

While it is unclear what additional information WHO wants from Bharat Biotech, Dr Jammi Nagaraj Rao highlighted some concerns regarding Covaxin's efficiency for The Wire Science. He pointed out that reaction to the Bharat Biotech's analysis of an 80.6% efficacy should be tempered because it is based on interim data of just 43 cases of COVID-19 among the 25,800 people who had been recruited for the trial. 

He calculated that the approximate 95% CI for Covaxin's efficacy rate would be 56.4% to 91.3% – which is too wide to be reliable.

Sputnik V:

Sputnik V gives around 92% protection against Covid-19, late stage trial results published in The Lancet reveal.

The effectiveness of the Covishield vaccine is nearly 90% as per the global reports and Covaxin's 81% according to interim 3rd phase trial results.

According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) head Dr Balram Bhargava, the immunity after the first dose of Covishield was found to be strong and that the three months gap will give the best results, a report in Times of India said.

However, the immunity level produced after the first dose of Covaxin is not as high and "this means the second dose should be taken after four weeks to ensure full efficacy", the TOI report quoted him as saying.
